Women's Education Program

In Project Muso’s Women’s Education Program, participants learn skills they need to improve the health and quality of life of their families. Training intensively for 10 hours each week for 15-18 months (depending on the needs and pace of the class), participants develop creative solutions to crises of poverty and disease that they face. Classes are taught by a team of Health Educators, women from Yirimadjo who have been intensively trained by experts in each of these fields.  Participants develop a broad foundation, including:

 H ealth skills to aid in the prevention and treatment of deadly illnesses in their communities, including malaria, diarrheal disease and AIDS;

 E nterprise skills, to enable women to launch small business through Women’s Cooperatives;

 A ctivism skills, so that they can teach and mobilize their community around crises of health and development, through an Organized Diffusion Model; and

 L iteracy and math skills, which support each of these goals.

The combination of Health, Enterprise, Activism and Literacy is essential to Project Muso's vision.  Through the Women’s Education Program and Springboard Microfinance Program, Project Muso provides participants with the training and financial support they need to establish small businesses to improve the health and well being of their families. By the completion of their in-class training, participants in the Women’s Education Program have not only become Community Health Promoters but they have also developed essential skills for starting a small enterprise, including feasibility research and organizational and financial management.

Each class establishes itself as an independent Women’s Cooperative, which elects officers, establishes common objectives, writes bylaws for internal regulation and creates a system of savings. The names of the cooperatives founded by Project Muso’s first four classes evoke their dynamic approach:

  • Cesiri: “Fasten Your Seatbelts and Get Ready For Action!”
  • Sigitemogoson: “You Can’t Make Any Progress Just Sitting Around!”
  • Yeelenton: “The Illumination Association”
  • Yerenye: “Advancement”
